Joint Injections

A joint injection is a pain management procedure used to help diagnose and treat joint conditions. The most common locations for the joint injection are finger, toe, wrist, ankle, shoulder, tendon and hip. The injections are used to help with arthritis, tendonitis, gout, fasciitis, musculoskeletal issues and rotator cuff issues.

The is no preparation for the procedure. It takes about 30 minutes. The doctor may inject a numbing agent before injecting a medicine such as corticosteroids to any inflammation, swelling, heat or tenderness in the joint. Patients generally respond to the first treatment but may request a follow up injection with the approval of their doctor. The injection may cause side effects such as swelling, heat and tenderness at the site of the injection. The doctor will advise the patient on side effects, should they occur.
